There are so many unanswered questions in my mind, Was there a link or a tie between him later developing mild tourette syndrome and his earlier experience with selective mustim? I still think that ground zero for us was the immunizations and vaccines with mercury he was given at a year old and his change in behavior once having the shot and the then lack of eye contact.
Even though the doctors said there was no tie at that time, I still think there was and that time will tell. That from that time on some sort of receptors did not develop in his brain that should of due to the shots.
The idea that the three are threaded together or some how tied as apposed to three separate issues. No one seems to have an answer or they are too afraid to look fearing law suits.

my son was diagnosed as autistic before he was diagnosed with SM…. however , my child has ALWAYS been “him”… there was no point at which i could identify the disorder…. he was born with it… and he received no vaccinations… there will come a day when SM falls under the autistic spectrum
Comment by m krause May 16, 2008 @ 5:10 amHi there…As a mother of a child with Tics and OCD, I did a lot of research about vaccinations before my son was born. The best thing I came across that helped me make my decision was the thinking that we are all geneticaly prone to something…but….these vaccines could spark (so to speak) the igniter switch and start the ball rolling. We opted for no vaccines, we couldn’t take the risk that we could exaccerbate the already there condition. Even though my son does have tics and OCD, it is greatly controlled through the foods he eats….I sometimes wonder if not vaccinating has helped him to respond better with his healthy eating.
I truly believe that the chemicals in our foods have a huge impact on our children who deal with neurological challenges. My son is proof of that. When we cleaned up his diet of chemicals and food sensitivities his tics and OCD vanished in a weeks time.
My experience with my son inspired me to start http://www.smallchanges.info to help other parents realize they can help their children through foods and see amazing results. For the most part with the exceptions of colds and allergies, my son is tic free.
I think parents need to really read and do their own research if there is a chance of any neurological disorders that run in the family.
My best to you,

Hello,
I would like to strongly suggest that we understand Selective Mutism as an anxiety disorder. Research has borne this out, treatment providers have gained success when treating it as such, and children with SM are able to express their struggle by describing it in words that clearly, clearly reflect anxiety.
Selective Mutism is not the same as a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), which is the category of disorders that includes Autism, Asperger’s Disorder, and other disorders. PDDS, including Autism, do not have an underlying driver of anxiety. It is critical to understand what type of underlying problem (i.e., anxiety) creates Selective Mutism, so we approach it through the right kind of treatment. Effective treatment of Autism is different than effective treatment of Selective Mutism. It may be that some children have both, but please let us understand them as separate and requiring different treatments.
Thanks for “listening.”
